Value theory, ethics, metaethics
I am Associate Professor of Philosophy at Rice University. As of July 2024, I will be Associate Professor and Chancellor Jackman Professor in Philosophy at the University of Toronto. I work primarily in value theory. My first book, Achievement (OUP, 2015), is about the nature and value of achievement. In related work, I look at perfectionism -- the theory of value that holds that the exercise and development of characteristically human capacities is good -- as well as other topics in well-being, value theory, and metaethics. My new main project concerns uniqueness – what is it for something to be unique, and why does it matter? At the Centre, I will be working on two projects that concern the relationship of abilities (human or otherwise) to uniqueness. The first of these is a paper about the value of historical artifacts: old objects that have been made by humans for purpose have special significance – but why? The second is a paper about the relationship between the capacity for phenomenal consciousness and moral status.
