Medieval Philosophy, History of Philosophy, Philosophy of Action

I am a professor of philosophy and medieval studies at the University of Toronto, where I also serve as the chair of the Department of Philosophy. My main teaching and research interests lie in the history of philosophy and especially in medieval philosophy. My current research projects deal with medieval philosophy of mind (including the emotions and cognitive psychology), medieval metaphysics, and philosophy of action (free will).

At the Human Abilities Centre I am planning to work on conceptions of control in later medieval philosophy of action. Some authors, most famously John Duns Scotus and William of Ockham, resort to a version of agent causation to explain how human agents are in control of their actions. I, however, will focus on a set of thinkers, such as Godfrey of Fontaines, who reject agent causation, but who are also not compatibilists in the modern sense of the term.
