Cognitive science, philosophy of mind and philosophy of science

I am Professor for Cognition at Technical University Berlin. My professional background is in cognitive science, philosophy of mind and philosophy of science. I have worked on the metaphysics of mechanisms in the life sciences, mechanistic explanation, extended cognition, unconscious and implicit cognition and cognitive ontology. In my project at Human Abilities I plan to address-roughly speaking-the question of whether someone who calculates with their fingers cannot calculate. Put differently: my approach will be to reformulate the questions discussed in the literature on situated and embodied cognition in terms of abilities. My thesis is that by integrating insights from the metaphysics of abilities we can gain a new understanding of the role of the body and the environment in cognition.
